The ODDSSON: A Ho(s)tel That Combines The Best Of Both Worlds
Generic hotel with beige and white everything? Pass. A hostel with questionable sheets, snoring strangers, and claustrophobic cinder block walls? Double pass. If you’re looking for the best of both worlds (unique hostel experiences with the comfort of a 5-star hotel), then consider the ODDSSON ho(s)tel in Reykjavík, Iceland. Designed and branded by Döðlur Studio under creative director Daniel Atlason, this boutique hostel was built with the idea of contrast and mixing high with low to create a memorable stay.
The ODDSSON touts itself as “a hotel with a hostel atmosphere” and “a hostel with hotel service.” Here, you can stay decide to stay in a luxurious suite or in the bunk beds.
If you’re looking for something fun to do, try out the (soundproofed) karaoke room. If fine dining is more your speed, the ODDSSON has that as well at the Bazaar Restaurant (caviar, anyone?).
You can also hang out in the yoga studio or rooftop hot tub. The hostel aims to bring people together while being comfortable and feeling at home. Lost luggage giving you the vacation blues? The Lost Luggage Program in the lobby is a large glass walk-in closet for you to borrow clothes to wear, as well as learn about local designers.
High mixes with low when it comes to the furniture, which consists of custom made pieces next to an extremely rare Pierre Jeanneret chair or Tomasso Barbi floor lamp. In the lounge area alone, you can find gems from a range of artists like: Augusto Bozzi, Pierre Paulin, Pierre Chapo, Mario Bellini, Tobia Scarpa, Alessandro Becci, Paul Evans, Ettore Sotssass, Mario Botta, Alessandro Mendini, Gerrit Rietveld, Eero Saarinen, Luigi Caccia Dominioni, DeSede, Gervan, Milo Baughman, Michel Ducaroy, and Maison Jensen (to name just a few).
Döðlur Studio, in collaboration with Stáss architects, ODDSSON’s owners Margrét Ásgeirsdóttir and Arnar Gunnlaugsson as well as Jakob Jakobsson architect, Eiríkur Gunnar Helgason at Lumex, Steve Róberts and GÁ húsgögn, created all custom designed furniture and lighting; most of which are manufactured in Iceland. Even the bunk beds you’re sleeping on are custom designed by the team.
While nods to Icelandic design is a must at the ODDSSON, it would be wrong to not include Icelandic candy in the mini-bars.
