The Fragment Series Takes on Marble Waste
The Fragment series has an interesting, and worthwhile, story behind it. It begins with South Korea, a country barren of marble, where the material is imported from abroad. Two tons are wasted each day in the form of marble fragments that have lost their value and are left on shipping containers. The Fragment series is an attempt to retain the value and use the fragmentary pieces from the marble making processing.
Designers Hea-Kyoung and Jung-Ki of FICT design studio wanted to solve the problem of industrial waste this creates, so they teamed with a company called TOTAL MARBLE. They began by figuring out the value of the fragments, and using a resin material to create a marble waste that while less valuable as product can be used in real life projects.
Taking advantage of these fragments, FICT and TOTAL MARBLE created the Fragment series to illustrate the unique beauty of marble’s natural state. Their design of a stool, chair, side table, and tray show just one way we can solve problems together and help out the industrial environment.
