Fermob’s STUDIE Collection Reimagines the Traditional School Chair for Today

Earlier this year, renowned French furnishings brand Fermob shared the release of their 2022 collection. It includes the simple STUDIE collection, a series of two chairs that smartly reimagine the traditional school chair. Both pieces are designed by Tristan Lohner, who has previously partnered with Fermob on the creation of the Mooon! lamp, Balad lamp, and Bebop low tables. Lohner’s revamp of this childhood staple includes both a standard chair and an armchair, which we imagine many students would have enjoyed settling into during class time – us included.

The duo is aptly-named, as both STUDIE chairs bring a sense of school days nostalgia with them, albeit in a newfound minimalist style. Versatile, practical, and comfortable, the curved seats hug the body, a nice example of Fermob’s commitment to ergonomic design and attention to detail and a nice upgrade from actual school chairs. You might also notice they’re fitted with Fermob-patented glide pads, allowing the chairs to be moved across the floor without any noise rather than the sliding squeaks of childhood. Lightweight and hardworking – just like actual school chairs – STUDIE chairs are made of 100% recyclable aluminum, making them easy to move. They can also be conveniently stacked for storage, sealing the deal on this easy-to-use range of seating.

Practical and comfortable, while also refined and contemporary, STUDIE is the epitome of easy living. Both styles can be enjoyed indoors in your kitchen and dining room or outdoors on a balcony or terrace, making for a versatility so many of us can appreciate. Public spaces, such as restaurants and parks, will appreciate these accommodating pieces of furniture as well. Fermob’s STUDIE chairs are available in 21 of Fermob’s curated colors, with the exception of Honey and Poppy. This also includes the newest color addition: Black Cherry.

Designer Tristan Lohner expanded upon the design process, saying “STUDIE had to be a durable product above all. First of all, in terms of its construction, it had to be robust, stackable, and practical. Its design is thought above all for its great solidity, while keeping a feeling of lightness on the aesthetic level. Then we thought about a design that is not too constrained by fashion. STUDIE is a form of archetype revisited, its shape inspires softness and timelessness. This formal will is part of our quality approach: an industrial product that is not too exposed to the phenomenon of trend.”

Lohner went on to share, “We wanted a chair with impeccable ergonomics. Everything was thought out and prototyped many times before arriving at what we wanted in terms of comfort. The inclination of the backrest and the seat was important, but also the height of the chair, its ease of stacking and moving, because STUDIE is very light and requires no effort to handle.”

Appeal and practicality, universal use, and a contemporary design. It’s no wonder that the STUDIE collection has been awarded the Red Dot: Best of the Best in the Product Design 2022 category. The award is the highest distinction for pioneering, revolutionary designs and is awarded yearly in three disciplines: Product Design, Brand & Communication Design, and Concept Design. Made up of 50 international designers, architects, and teachers, products selected by the jury are “aesthetically appealing, functional, intelligent or innovative, and all have outstanding design in common.”

This new addition to Fermob’s lineup further adds to the brand’s reputation as a leading garden, terrace, and public space furnishings specialist. With a little time, STUDIE just might become as iconic as their legendary Bistro chair. It will be released May 15-17 at ICFF In New York City, stop by Booth 637 if you’ll be in attendance.
